ABOVE The groom’s mom designed and set up the entire tent (with some help from her incredible friends), so I tried to photograph the decorations from many different angles because I knew they were extra special to the groom.

The wedding day

VENUE
Most of the time, the bride and groom have put a great deal of thought into the location of their wedding. I think that it is just as important to capture photographs of the setting as it is to photograph the actual events.
The venue detail will give the event a sense of place. It will often make the viewer remember what it felt like to be at the wedding. I try to arrive early enough in the day so that I can photograph the setting before I ever see the bride. I photograph the spot that they have chosen for their bridal preparations, the location of the ceremony, and (time permitting, and if it is close by) the location of the reception. Not only does this give me a great opportunity to see how things are set up, but it also gives me a chance to photograph the buildings and some of the details that are a part of the setting. I also take this opportunity to scope out some locations for photographs if I haven’t already done so. While I am photographing, I poke around the grounds, looking for hidden nooks and interesting spots, conscious of how the light is going to change.
Scouting the venue also gives you a chance to interact with the other vendors. The florist may be decorating, the coordinator will probably be running around the venue, the band may be setting up. If you are there before the event begins, it will give you a great opportunity to chat with some of the other vendors and to hear about any last-minute changes to the schedule or anything else that may be important for your coverage of the event.
